Jeff Tanner developed an affinity for
the piano and an appreciation of music at a very young age, being
the son of a piano teacher and church organist. So, music
was a part of daily life in the home of Mr. Tanner.
In grade school and through high school and college,
Mr. Tanner was highly involved in every musical activity he could
possibly participate in. He toured the southeast and Europe
as a member of the Appling County High School Show Choir, and was
also active in the band program at that same school. He was
selected to represent his high school in Boys Solo at Regional and
State Literary Competitions where he
advanced as high as second in state. He was also selected
three years consecutively as a member of the Georgia High School
All State Chorus.
Jeff attended the University of Georgia in Athens,
where he graduated with a BBA in 1993. While there, he also
participated in the music department, studying voice with Dr. David
Stoffel, and participating in the Men’s Glee Club and Concert Choir
under the direction of Dr. Pierce Arant. Jeff was also a music
major for a period of time, and competed and placed first in the
state of Georgia in National Association of Teachers of Singing
(NATS) competition on two occasions.
It was during his high school years that Jeff
began learning the skills of piano technology. In 1984, he
attended a two-week informational workshop at the University of
South Carolina taught by James Bundrick, then the full time staff
Piano Technician at the USC School of Music. Jeff says this
was just enough information to “make me dangerous”!
During college, Mr. Tanner was fortunate to be
able to serve as student assistant to Dennis Curtis, RPT, further
developing his skills on the fine pianos at the University of Georgia
School of Music. It was here where he was able to really hone
his skills to a professional level, learning primarily from Mr.
Curtis, but also from other technicians and through attending meetings
of the Atlanta Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild.
After graduation, Mr. Tanner attempted several
different sales positions in an attempt to utilize his degree, but
continued to maintain a small clientele of piano owners, and performed
occasional contract work for a number of piano dealerships.
It seemed that a career in piano technology was
sure to be his calling. In 1997, he accepted a contract position
with Turner Keyboards, Inc., of Augusta, GA, a Yamaha and Steinway
dealership. Then, in January of 1998, the University of Georgia
came calling again, and hired him on a temporary/full time basis
until he accepted a full time appointment at the University of South
Carolina School of Music that August.
Mr. Tanner enjoyed a very good report and acclaim
with the faculty at USC, and his reputation has grown steadily in
greater Columbia and South Georgia among the finest piano teachers
and performers in the area.
In addition to preparing pianos for the more
than capable pianists at the Universiy of Georgia and the University
of South Carolina, Jeff has prepared pianos for performances by
some of the world's finest classical pianists, including the late
Ruth Laredo, Antonio Pompa Baldi, Jerome Lowenthal, Van Cliburn
Gold Medalist, Jon Nakamatsu, as well as a number of popular recording
artists, including Jim Brickman, Alicia Keys, Patti LaBelle, Aretha
Franklin, Marcus Roberts, Livingston Taylor, Sandy Patti and Neilson
Mr. Tanner has been a member of the Piano Technicians
Guild since 1997, and in 2003 successfully completed the series
of exams required to obtain the status of Registered Piano Technician.
Jeff is a devoted man of faith and is a proud
husband of his wife, Paula, and father of three wonderful children.
He enjoys spending as much of his spare time with his family as
possible, and also enjoys singing and playing several musical instruments.
An occasional round of golf is another fun pastime, however one
of his most loved past-times, other than his family and church,
lies in the world of sports following University of Georgia Bulldog
